What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine, now widely used by physiotherapists who are specially trained to safely incorporate Western and Chinese techniques as part of their physiotherapy provision. The Western approach is also known as dry needling. It is designed to target pain and to promote healing through attempted stimulation of the brain and nervous system. This is via the insertion of single use, pre-sterilised, fine needles into the skin at specific points. The treatment promotes the release of the body’s own healing chemicals, such as endorphins to help relieve pain, melatonin to help promote sleep and serotonin to help promote well-being. The Chinese describe acupuncture as a way of balancing the flow of energy in our body in an attempt to restore health.
At Southbourne Physiotherapy Clinic, we use acupuncture in conjunction with our other treatment options, like manual techniques and exercise therapy, to help bring about recovery. The treatment is particularly targeted at the following conditions: neck pain, tension-type headaches, migraine headaches, shoulder conditions, tennis elbow, back pain and arthritic pain in the knees. Amanda is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. This organisation strictly regulates their members in order to ensure safe acupuncture techniques are used.
